A Guide to Holocaust related teaching materials.

Website: http://fcit.coedu.usf.edu/holocaust/resource/resource.htm
Grade: A-

One of the great tragedies of our time took place in Germany during World War II. It is important that we look to these terrible acts to remind us of the places that we do not wish to return. If you are teaching about the Holocaust there is a great deal of material available in books and on the web. Unfortunately not all of the resources are appropriate, and some are actually produced by antisemitic groups that paint a positive slant on the Holocaust. I came across this site which is one of the best sites I have found to find resources related to the Holocaust. It contains many photos, documents, lists of books, movies, and much more. The photos and materials I viewed show a great deal about the tragic conditions, yet leave out some of the more grotesque pictures. I think this is a good balance, because there is a fine line between understanding the inhumanity, and celebrating the gore. This site has done well to find the balance.

Website: http://www.civil-war.net/

Grade: A

Cost: Free

When teaching students about the civil war, there are few sites that have more information and photos that are well organized as Civil War .net. It is an amazing collection of information. Battles are outlined, politics are discussed, and historical figures are brought to life. This is a fun site that really sheds light on this significant struggle in our nation’s history.

State of the Union

It was nice to see that despite the hatred and bitterness in Washington the State of the Union address went smooth and was very cordial. The initiatives presented were interesting but many are likely not to gain much ground. The key issues discussed and my brief opinion are as follows:

Social Security and other entitlements: Bush called for action and reform to these entitlement programs, in order to keep them viable in the future. Unfortunately the privatization of social security is dead in the water with a Democratic Congress. The fact is that the way our federal government manages money no program administered by them will be effective. Privatization was a great idea, but will never come to pass.

Iraq: Boost the troops and give it a chance. The problem in Iraq is two fold, one the press is against it and are looking for any negative thing they can jump on, and second due to political correctness we no longer capable of fighting a war to win. War is a brutal reality that requires brutal and massive force. The troop surge may help some especially if we use them to destroy the terror cells, and any person or group that harbors them, and to secure the borders to stop the influx of foreign fighters. Unfortunately we as a country are to soft and incapable of getting tough with the terrorists that keep this going.

Terrorism: We are working with our allies and friends to thwart the efforts of terrorists: The fact is that there has not been a mainland US attack since 911, although the terrorists have made multiple attempts. Bush has proven to do a good job in preventing terrorist attacks, and if we let him do has job and gather the inelegance needed he will continue to do well. He does make a good point that this does need to be a global effort.

Immigration and Border Security: He called for a guest workers program, with no amnesty and tighter border security. Although many fellow conservatives do not even want a guest workers program, I see the need for such a program. The fact is that we have one of the lowest unemployment rates in history, and lets face it there are some Americans that are just unemployable. We need the workers to keep our economy strong. With this subject Bush is on the money.

Economy: The economy is strong as a result of the tax cuts and we must restrain our federal spending. The economy is very strong and many Democrats look like idiots as they try to deny the strenght of our economy. The call to eliminate earmarks and reduce federal spending is great, but sound a little shallow coming from Bush. His track record on fiscal responsibility is dismal, even Clinton did a better job restraining himself. I just hope that he is serious, but I question his ability to do what he is calling for.
